Day 13 – A Song From Your Favorite Album

Jen VT: “Summer Came” by The Heavy Guilt* – Picking a favorite album in such a vibrant scene is damn near impossible. The Heavy Guilt’s self-titled third offering makes it back into my rotation over and over so I’d have to say it’s my favorite. Trying to pick a tune off such a widely diverse collection proved just as hard as picking the album itself. “Summer Came” has a special place in my heart because of my birthday party and more so because it’s such a killer tune. From the opening guitar riff- I’m hooked. Erik Canzona’s vocals are strong and steady throughout with Al Howard’s always poetic lyrics painting a vivid picture.  It’s one of the first Guilt songs I fell in love with and I’ve been coming back for more ever since.

Natalie Watson Webber: “Weary Traveler” by Gloomsday – First off: What were we thinking?!?! A “Favorite Album”?  This is cruel and unusual punishment how can any of us possibly choose one favorite album?!  Maybe we shoulda rethought this one Jen :/ That said the record that has been in constant rotation since I’ve acquired it has been Gloomsday’s Paradise Tossed.  The track that I repeat the most is “Weary Traveler” (It was a twelve-way toss up,-really).  I love the hard-driving intro and the interplay between  guitarist Justin Cota and drummer Lori Sokolowski it opens the song with just the right tone.  The hook “Get lost along the way” is completely engaging and demands both your attention and imagination.  Guitar riffs in-between are gritty punctuated at the end by no-nonsense raw rock n’ roll drumming goodness.  Further along in the song Sokolowski questions “Why can’t you sleep at night?” to which there is no answer. <- Perfect.  Sokolowski’s and Cota’s singing together is dessert for your ears, so sweet in contrast amongst the unabashed abuse they deliver to their instruments much to our delight.  The song ends in a heady jam that lets you wonder if they got to where they were going,-but it probably doesn’t matter cause you know they had a hell of a time getting there, as did we all.

Rick Ostop: “Seattle” by The Heavy Guilt* I’m running out of ways to describe the growth that The Heavy Guilt unveils on their new album. I promised Jen I would pick a different artist for every song but she keeps asking for favorites.  So, if I have to break my promise, I’m sure she will understand, especially if it’s for a Heavy Guilt song. [Editor’s note: Jen forgives Rick completely.]

Andrea Moore: “Wonder if She Knows” by Family Wagon*. There are only four songs on this album and I love every one of them.

Paul Moffat: “Too Damn Good” – The NFormals*.  Yes, I know they’re on my list twice.  Very, very impressive band.  I have to say I was a little sad that I didn’t fill their bass vacancy.  As of today, their album “Self-Titled” is getting massive rotation on my personal playlist.

Ryan Miller: “Slow Motion” by Social Club*

Eric Blocker: “White Horse” Transfer* – I have to admit, I really love Transfer. They are my favorite San Diego band. White Horse is from the album Future Selves. The whole album is good. The whole album! When we (Uniform Victor) were looking for studios to record our first EP, I first heart White Horse as a sample of what had been recorded at Black Box Studio. I liked the song so much, I asked Mario Quintero, the engineer who recorded White horse, to record UV. We recorded three songs in 10 hours. Mario was super cool and he did a great job on our EP. He did a great job on White Horse as well.
